Discover Hatfield's Goode Grub

Walking into Hatfield's Goode Grub at 16700 Lorain Ave, Cleveland, OH 44111, United States feels like stepping into a neighborhood tradition that never tried to be trendy and never had to. I first stopped by on a cold weekday morning after a long drive across the west side, and the place was already humming with locals chatting over coffee and plates that looked unapologetically filling. That first impression stuck with me because it captured what this diner does best-serving honest food that people actually crave.

The menu leans heavily into comfort food, and that phrase deserves attention here because it’s not just marketing fluff. According to data from the National Restaurant Association, nearly 60% of diners in the Midwest prefer familiar, classic dishes over experimental cuisine, and Hatfield’s Goode Grub clearly understands that appetite. You’ll find hearty breakfasts served all day, stacked burgers, crispy fries, and sandwiches that don’t pretend to be delicate. When I ordered the corned beef hash, it arrived with a golden crust and generous portions, the kind of plate that tells you nobody in the kitchen is counting ounces.

One thing that stands out is how consistent the cooking process feels. Watching the grill in action, you can see the short-order method done right-flat-top heat controlled by experience rather than timers, eggs cracked to order, and pancakes flipped by eye. A former line cook I know once told me that diners live or die by consistency, and that idea is backed by food service research from Cornell University, which notes that repeat customers value reliability more than novelty. That reliability shows up here in every bite.

Location plays a big role in why this spot works. Sitting along Lorain Avenue, it’s easy to reach from multiple Cleveland neighborhoods, making it a regular stop for commuters, families, and even first responders grabbing quick meals. The diner setup encourages conversation, and I’ve overheard regulars comparing notes on daily specials like meatloaf or hot roast beef sandwiches. These aren’t dishes you rush through; they’re meals meant to ground your day.

Reviews from locals tend to echo the same themes: generous portions, friendly service, and prices that feel fair in a time when dining out can feel expensive. Statistically, affordability matters-Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that casual dining spending has tightened over the past few years, and places like this benefit from keeping value front and center. Hatfield’s Goode Grub doesn’t cut corners to do that; instead, it focuses on straightforward ingredients and efficient execution.

From an expertise standpoint, the kitchen clearly understands diner fundamentals. Fry oil is clean, which you notice immediately in the crispness of the food, and seasoning stays balanced rather than heavy-handed. That attention to basics is something culinary educators often emphasize, including instructors from the American Culinary Federation, who stress that mastering simple techniques is the foundation of great food. You don’t need foam or microgreens when the fundamentals are solid.

There are limits, of course. This isn’t the place for plant-based innovation or global fusion, and the menu reflects a specific tradition rather than endless variety. Still, that focus is part of why the diner has built trust over time. When people walk in, they know what they’re getting, and that confidence keeps them coming back.

What makes Hatfield’s Goode Grub memorable isn’t a single standout dish but the way the whole experience comes together-food, location, and community working in sync. It’s the kind of diner where reviews are passed by word of mouth, where the menu feels like an old friend, and where consistency quietly does the heavy lifting day after day.

  • The food was fantastic. The baby back ribs were tasty and tender. Cuban sandwich was great. The hamburger moist and tasty. The banana pudding was the best I ever had. Our whole party of 4 totally enjoyed our dinner. Mr.Hatfield and staff was very friendly. It felt like you were among good friends. This was our first time there. We are going back to try the breakfast too. I highly recommend this place. It felt like you were stepping back in time , like the old Cheers segments on TV.

  • First time patrons enjoyed a wonderful meal. Got to spend time with Ken and Emily. Delightful folks with a clear vision of good food and community generosity. No matter what you order please get Ken's chocolate chip cookies. Made to order and served hot out of the oven. Omelets were outstanding as was the service. Self service coffee bar is a nice touch.

  • I've seen this place on new day Cleveland several times and have been wanting to go there but it is pretty far from home. My wife decided to take me there for my birthday and I absolutely loved it. Amazing food!!!!!!!! Great atmosphere and everyone working was so friendly! Ken (owner) even came out from cooking to make sure all his guests were satisfied. You never see that any longer, we felt so welcome and had such a great time here. Well worth the hour+ drive. We had the loaded fries with pork for an appetizer. Very good! My wife had the pulled pork dinner and I had a full rack of ribs, both were great! We had the white cheddar augratin potatoes for a side, oh my heaven, best ever!!!!!! Then for dessert we had the banana pudding and chocolate chip cookies! Both were amazing. Totally recommend this place! We will definitely be back! Thanks Ken for a memorable birthday!

  • Jesse sets the vibe as soon as you walk in the door and she just makes you feel like you’re in ‘Cheers’ and everyone there is your friend. I’ve decided to base my reviews on comparing my smokes @ home to what I partake away from home. And the brisket was moist but on the pot roast side of the scale. No bark or detectable smoke. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Just not OMG material. The potato salad had a nice balance and all the expected crunchy bits. Added just a little yellow mustard but that’s just my personal preference. If in the neighborhood would definitely stop in and try something else. As we were leaving Chief waved and said Have a Great Day, Thanks for coming in. The passion He puts into His craft, shows in the atmosphere and food delivered.

  • A real gem that I discovered! Best burger I had since I can't remember & reasonable prices. Friendly service and relaxing atmosphere. The chefI/owner is actually a descendent of Anse Hatfield of the famous Hatfield/ McCoy fued.

  • There’s no place I would rather eat than Hatfields! So glad they’re open for consistent hours after a successful Food truck season! Best breakfast in town! Amazing omelettes, and sausage gravy on biscuits homemade and crispy bacon!! Down home atmosphere and real caring about people! Can’t go wrong!

  • Came for lunch and ordered the mac and cheese burger with onion rings! The burger was huge and I couldnt even finish it. Everything tasted great! Our server was attentive and made us feel like we were very welcomed by joking and making fun of my friend with me. It was totally appropriate and we laughed together. It was a great experience all in all.

  • Hatfield’s is our family’s favorite restaurant! It’s the number one place that our daughter wants to go when she comes into town. The ribs are the best I’ve ever had, and the brown sugar bacon Mac and cheese is delicious! You should also save room for cobbler for dessert! Hatfield’s is the place to go for a fun atmosphere, great service, and excellent food!
